High school letterman jackets showcase
embroiderer's talent
Looking at all the letterman jackets students
proudly wear around high school campuses these
days, one can't help but wonder whose handiwork
goes into the finished product.
More often than not, Mary Johnson had a hand in
them.
The Monogram Magic store owner was recently
honored by Impressions magazine, which
published her latest embroidered creation-a blue
and silver Sierra High letterman jacket.
In the spirit of giving back, Johnson discussed
donating the jacket to the school with athletic
director Vern Gebhardt.
The end result came Wednesday, as the now-famous jacket was presented to Sierra
High senior Darci Cullers, a two-time Valley Oak League girls soccer Most Valuable
Player.
"Vern saw it hanging in the window and said he had a home for it," recalls Johnson.
"Darci is the home."
The jacket, adorned with several patches honoring Cullers' league awards and other
athletic accomplishments, is high lighted by a soccer-ball design on the back.
"I'm very honored," Cullers said. "It 's a very nice jacket."
Johnson, who has owned the Manteca store with her daughter, Danette Jarred, for eight
years, was honored once before by the screen printing industry for a Western shirt she
designed.
Back in December, editors at Impressions, a nationally-published magazine based in
Texas, called Johnson and requested a jacket for future publication.
